BENEDICT MURRAY-BRUCE OON (born February 18th, 1956).
Senator Ben Murray-Bruce was born on February 18th, 1956 to Mullighan and Margaret Murray-Bruce. Both his parents were mixed race (half Nigerian, from Akassa in Bayelsa State and half European).
Parents
Ben Bruce's father, William Mullighan Murray-Bruce was an executive with the United African Company (UAC). UAC is a successor of the Royal Niger Company and it was the biggest non-oil company in Nigeria up till the early 1990s.
UAC had many subsidiaries and Mullighan Murray-Bruce worked for Kingsway Stores, the largest chain of chemists, supermarkets and malls in Nigeria at the time.
The children were born in different cities across Nigeria because Mullighan Murray-Bruce was often transfered from city to city.
Upon retirement from Kingsway, he was given some of the underperforming branches as part of his retirement benefit and he founded his own supermarket chain, Domino Stores, using those branches.
Education
Ben Murray-Bruce attended Our Lady of Apostles Private Primary School, Yaba, Lagos from 1962 till 1968. He attended St Gregory's College, Ikoyi, Lagos for his secondary education from 1969 till 1973.
He was the Senior Prefect at St Gregory's College and here his organisational ability and interest in the entertainment industry shone through.
As Senior Prefect, Ben Murray-Bruce was also Chairman of the Harvest Planning Committee and they raised a record amount of ₦400, which was a lot of money in 1973.
The school chaplain, Reverend Father James O'Connel and Ben Murray-Bruce invested the money in musical equipment for the school band. It paid off hugely.
A junior student Melvin Ukachi had approached Ben and asked if he could do some practice with the band. Ben responded in the affirmative. Ukachi and his group later known as Ofege used the school band to wax their first album which sold over one million copies.
Ofege released songs that were well played all over Nigeria and indeed all over Africa and they did this while they were still secondary school students!
Ben Murray-Bruce was interested in entertainment from an early age, but his father didn't always approve of this. He said that his father came into his room one day and saw him dancing and threatened to break his legs if he ever caught him dancing like that again. He said
He attended Simpson College, Indianola Iowa (1975 – 1976); Iowa State University (1976 – 1977); and University of Southern California (1977 – 1979), where he received a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration and Marketing. He said that he easily got bored and he often changed schools whenever he got bored.
He received his big break in the entertainment industry by accident when he met Louis Smallwood while he was a student at the University of Southern California.
He was sitting at home in California one day when there was a knock on the door. He opened the door and discovered that the person that knocked had gotten the wrong address. However, they had an interesting conversation and Ben Bruce asked the man what he did for a living. The man was a teacher of child stars.

Ighodalo Pays Glowing Tribute To Pa Adebanjo, Says He's 'The Last Of The Originals'
Frontline politician and candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2024 Governorship Election in Edo State, Dr. Asue Ighodalo, has paid glowing tribute to the late Chief Ayo Adebanjo, who passed on last week Friday, at the ripe age of 96, describing him as "the last of the originals".
Ighodalo, in a statement signed by Erhabor Emokpae in Benin City on Monday, said Pa Adebanjo's transition marks the end of an era in Nigerian politics and democratic struggle.
Ighodalo, described the late elder statesman as "a fearless fighter, a mentor, and a moral compass, whose unwavering commitment to justice and democracy left an indelible mark on Nigeria’s history."
Ighodalo, reflecting on his personal relationship with the late Chief Adebanjo, was quoted as saying that the late nonagenarian was more than a political leader as he was a father figure, a trusted guide, and a pillar of wisdom who nurtured and supported a lot of them through the struggles for democracy.
“His passing is a loss to me personally. He was my leader, my mentor, my father in the days of our democracy struggle. He nurtured me, supported me, and stood as a rock and guide through the turbulent waters of our nation’s political journey. His wisdom was boundless, his foresight unmatched, and his courage unshakeable,” Ighodalo said.
Ighodalo stated that as one of the last standing founding members of Afenifere, Chief Adebanjo was a towering figure in Nigerian politics, dedicated to true federalism, equity, and good governance. He said his predictions about the nation’s political trajectory were almost prophetic, a testament to his deep understanding of Nigeria’s complexities.
“Nearly all of his political predictions have come to pass, a testament to his deep understanding of the forces shaping our nation. He warned us, he advised us, he pointed the way forward, not out of self-interest but out of an unyielding love for Nigeria and an uncompromising belief in its potential,” Ighodalo stated.
Ighodalo noted the vacuum his passing has created in Nigeria’s leadership space.

The war that sent shockwaves into the heart of the old Sokoto caliphate was not Osogbo war of 1840. It was the Alaafin Oluewu's war of 1830.
This was not a war between Ilorin and Oyo...it was a war between Sokoto caliphate and Yorùbá nation in coalition with Baribas. Most of the powerful Yorùbá warrior kings and Warlords that would later prove their legends were involved in this war.
The Phalanx a coalition of vast soliders under the commands of Alaafin Oluewu, prince Atiba of Ago Oja (who would later be the next king after Oluewu), Baale of Ogbomoso, Onikoyi, Eleduwe (A king in one of the Bariba kingdoms) Jato(a general in the Borgu army whose earlier campaigns against the Futa jalon earned him a reputation). Baale of Iseyin and Baale of Saki. Kurumi of Ijaye also joined the ranks with his private militia (at this time,he was a provincial ruler).
They camped at a place called Otefan. The leaders of the expedition were Oluewu of Oyo and Eleduwe of Burgu. The Eleduwe trusted all the lesser generals. Under his command but Alaafin did not trust some of his, including of Ogbomoso and Onikoyi (Onikoyi had a long history of being controversial. He was one of the first provincial rulers of Oyo to pledge allegiance to the Emir of Ilorin)... Oluewu was careful not to put them in strategic sections in the military formations.
Sultan Belo of Sokoto (son of usman Dan Fodio) sent a much larger army of 17 warlords and their soldiers under the command of Esugoyi(ruler of the vassal state of Rabbah) to meet with much smaller army of the Emir of Ilorin. He hoped for victory in a decisive battle against Oyo and obsession to extend to the coast. The army he sent was so large that the coalition army of Oyo was outnumbered twelve to one.
Usual battle Phalanx of the southwest at the time was usually divided into three. A Phalanx stays at the center, one to the right and another to the left(this formation was usually followed religously during....that Lisabi of Egbaland used the positions to confer military titles in his militia. The Jaguna commanded the army at the center,Lukotun commanded the right flank and Lukosi commanded the left flank). In this battle,the Eleduwe fought at the center with his battle-hardened warriors.
Oluewu fought from the right and lesser rulers manned the Phalanx to the left. Eleduwe was the instant hero of the battle. As he suppressed the enemy from the center, he sent soldiers to fill the ranks on each sides at the same time to force the enemy Into the center. From the center, they greatly slaughtered the Fulani warriors and broke their ranks. They fled in different directions with the coalition army routing them as they fled and slaughtering them in thousands. As the Fulani nobles took to hero...they delegated horsemen to confront the enemies pursuing them to slow them down using the calvary advantage as they escaped. The victory was decisive but came with its casualties as well, Eleduwe lost his son in the war.
After this war,the Sokoto caliphate gave up on annexing Yorùbáland and the combats went back to tensions between Ilorin and Oyo.

A 37-year-old Nigerian national identified as John Paul, has been arrested in Phuket, Thailand for possessing cocaine with the intention to sell.
The individual was apprehended at a rented residence in Village 11, Thepkrasattri sub district, police say at the weekend.
The operation conducted on February 13, 2025, was a joint effort by Phuket Immigration and officers from Thalang Police Station.
During the arrest, officers confiscated nine plastic bags of cocaine, each weighing approximately 0.8 grams, totalling 7.2 grams.
The drugs were discovered in the suspect’s bedroom, wrapped in black tape and placed in a brown plastic bag.
The apprehension followed a tip-off that a foreign individual was supplying cocaine to tourists in the vicinity.
After conducting surveillance and gathering intelligence, officers proceeded to the suspect’s location early in the day.
Upon arrival, they noted John Paul’s suspicious behaviour before he allowed them entry, leading to the discovery of the drugs.
In questioning, the suspect reportedly admitted to acquiring cocaine from an unidentified foreign supplier at Bang Tao Beach and reselling it to foreign clients at a profit.
He stated that he bought 12 bars of cocaine for 2,000 baht each and sold them for 3,000 baht each, with some already sold before his arrest.
John Paul has been charged with possession of a Category 2 narcotic, cocaine, with intent to sell without permission.
He was informed of his legal rights and handed over to Thalang Police Station for further legal proceedings.
The police are continuing their investigation to uncover additional individuals involved in this drug network.
